The sign that is the Son of Man (cf. Luke 11:29) is in keeping with the criti-cal characteristic of Jesus' presence. Simeon the prophet says about him: "He is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected." (Luke 2:34). This rejection will reach its height in the passion, death and crucifixion.

John Testified To The Light

The liturgy for the Third Sunday of Advent, Year B, combines this section about John the Baptist with John 1:6-8 which is spliced into the prologue itself. The combination of these two passages make John the Baptist the testimony to the Light that shines on all men and gives them life.
